The Designer's Perspective: How We Design, Curate and Select Tiles for Our Clients
A Tuesday Lane x TileZu Collaboration
Welcome Back to The Designer's Perspective
This is the third instalment of our monthly series with the team at Tuesday Lane – where we go behind the scenes of the interior design process! This month, Bree and Jess are pulling back the curtain on how they actually approach tile selection for their clients. Spoiler: it's never about picking the prettiest tile and hoping for the best!
It's Never Just About the Tile
Designing a home is never about a single decision. It's a layered process – one that starts with the big picture and moves through to the smallest details. And while tile selection can feel like a defining moment, for us, it's simply one part of a much broader, more considered approach. At Tuesday Lane, every decision is made in context – guided by the architecture, the client, and the way a space is intended to be lived in.
The Foundation: Understanding the Space and Its Story
Every project begins with understanding. We take time to unpack how our clients live or work, how they want to feel in their space, and how it needs to function day to day. From there, we begin shaping a design direction – one that feels both personal and enduring.
This early stage often includes:
Spatial planning and flow
Architectural alignment
Defining the overall aesthetic direction
Establishing a material and tonal palette
This is where the foundation is set. And importantly, it means no individual selection – tiles included – is ever made in isolation. We see each project as a cohesive whole, not a collection of separate decisions.
Concept to Development: Refining the Material Palette
Once the direction is clear and we've locked in a floor plan, we begin to layer in materials.
This is where a project really starts to take shape – through finishes, textures, and tones that work together to create a cohesive environment. Our role is to refine, edit, and ensure every element contributes to the overall outcome!
We consider:
How materials interact with natural light
The balance between warmth, texture, and contrast
Continuity across adjoining spaces and the entire home
Longevity beyond current trends
Whether selections truly align with our client's style and lifestyle
Tiles are introduced at this stage as part of that broader palette – not as a standalone feature, but as something that supports and grounds the design.
Collaboration: Working with Trusted Suppliers
A key part of our process is collaboration. We work closely with a select group of trusted suppliers whose ranges align with our approach – materials that are considered, refined, and built to last. This allows us to move beyond endless options and instead focus on what's actually relevant to the project at hand!
It also gives us access to deeper knowledge and insight. The suppliers and representatives we collaborate with are specialists – they have an intimate understanding of their products, how they perform, and where they work best. Rather than attempting to navigate every new release on our own, we lean on this expertise to ensure each selection is informed, relevant, and well-resolved.
Through these relationships, we're able to:
Source curated, high-quality ranges
Understand product performance and real-world application
Navigate availability and lead times with confidence
Ensure each selection is both beautiful and practical
It's a more measured way of working – one that prioritises quality over quantity.
Resolution: Designing Beyond the Surface
A tile is never just a tile. It's how it's laid. Where it begins and ends. How it aligns with joinery, fixtures, and the architecture around it.
As part of our design development, we consider:
Layout and set-out
Alignment with architectural elements
Junctions between different materials
Grout colour and joint spacing
These decisions might seem subtle, but they're often what define the difference between a space that feels considered and one that feels unfinished!
Execution: From Design to Reality
Our process doesn't stop at selection. We remain involved through documentation, specification, and construction – ensuring that what's been designed is carried through with clarity and intent.
This continuity allows us to:
Minimise on-site uncertainty
Avoid costly changes or delays
Maintain design integrity from concept through to completion
It's this end-to-end approach that ensures the final outcome reflects the original vision.
Why This Process Matters
When every decision is made in isolation, mistakes happen! But when each layer is considered as part of a whole – from planning through to final selections – the process becomes more efficient, more refined, and ultimately more successful.
For our clients, this means:
Fewer costly revisions
Greater confidence in decision-making
A cohesive, resolved outcome they'll love for years
For us, good design is about how everything comes together – quietly, seamlessly, and with intention.
Tiles, like every other material, are selected not for how they look on their own, but for how they belong within the space. And when that's done well, the result doesn't feel forced or overdesigned.
It simply feels right!
