The appeal of large format is simple: fewer grout lines. A bathroom floor laid in large format reads as a surface rather than a grid, and in a small room that makes the space feel considerably bigger — the opposite of what most people assume. Fewer joints also means less grout to keep clean, which matters more over ten years than it does on the day.
It suits open-plan living, bathrooms where you want floor and wall to run continuously, and any scheme where the tile should recede and let the joinery, stone or light do the talking.
Large format is less forgiving to install than standard sizes. Substrate flatness becomes critical — the tolerances a 300x300 will hide, a large format tile will not. Budget properly for floor preparation and use someone who has laid the format before. This is the single most common place we see large format go wrong, and it's almost never the tile's fault. That warning is also our advantage. TileZu is part of the same family business as Elite Tile Works, a Wollongong-based tiling team who have been installing large format and slab across the Illawarra, Sydney and the South Coast for over fifteen years. Plenty of tilers won't take large format on, and that's fair — it demands different equipment, different preparation and a different tolerance for error.
It also means we can tell you before you order whether your substrate, your installer and your budget line up. Ask us. We'd far rather have that conversation early than after delivery — and if you'd like it supplied and installed by one team, we can do that too.
Now, if you're after something larger still — full-height wall panels, book-matched feature walls, benchtop-scale surfaces — see our Slabs collection!
