The Designer's Perspective: Common Tile Mistakes We See in Renovations (And How to Avoid Them)
A Tuesday Lane x TileZu Collaboration
Welcome Back to The Designer's Perspective
This is the second instalment of our monthly series with the talented team at Tuesday Lane – where interior design expertise meets real-world renovation advice! This month, Bree and Jess are sharing the tile mistakes they see time and time again in renovations – and more importantly, how to avoid making them yourself.
The Truth About Tile Mistakes
Tiles have the power to completely transform a space, but they also have the power to instantly date it if the wrong decisions are made! Here's the thing most people don't realise: the biggest mistakes usually happen before installation even begins. By the time tiles are on the wall, it's too late to change course. But the good news? Most of these mistakes are entirely avoidable with a little foresight – or the right people guiding you 😉
Mistake #1: Choosing the Wrong Grout Colour
Grout is often treated as an afterthought – a last-minute decision made at the tile shop checkout. But it can completely change how your tile presents in a space.

What we see go wrong:
-
High-contrast grout that overwhelms the tile. There's definitely a time and place for contrast grout, but more often than not, it ends up looking busy or harsh rather than intentional.
-
Light grout in high-traffic areas. It looks beautiful on day one… and stained by day thirty. Floors, entryways, and kitchen splashbacks need grout that can handle real life.
-
Mismatched tones. When grout doesn't sit well with the tile, the whole scheme can feel unintentional. It throws off the colour palette and makes quality tiles look cheaper than they are.
Designer tips:
-
For a seamless, high-end look, match your grout colour as closely as possible to your tile.
-
For floors, err slightly darker – it's more forgiving over time.
-
Only use contrast grout if you intentionally want to highlight the tile pattern (think: white subways with dark grout for a deliberate graphic effect).
Mistake #2: Over-Tiling the Space
More tile doesn't always mean better. Tiling every possible surface – when it's not necessary or required – can create a cold, uninviting space that feels flat and sterile. It can also make your premium or feature tiles lose their impact entirely. If everything is a feature, nothing is.

Designer tips:
-
Let tiles feature, not dominate. A single statement wall often has more impact than four tiled surfaces competing for attention.
-
Balance tiles with other materials – timber, paint, cladding, stone, or textured render – to create warmth and softness.
-
Use tiles strategically. Ask yourself: where do I need tiles for durability or water protection, and where am I just adding them out of habit?
Mistake #3: Selecting a Tile Before Thinking About the Layout
This one catches people out constantly. You fall in love with a tile, purchase it, and then discover it doesn't suit the layout you had in mind – or worse, it creates awkward cuts and misaligned grout lines once installed.
A classic example: choosing a subway tile for a herringbone pattern without considering where the joins and cuts will fall in your specific space.

What we see go wrong:
-
Awkward tile cuts in highly visible areas (nothing kills a beautiful tile faster than a 3cm sliver next to the door frame)
-
Grout lines that don't align with fixtures – showers, toilets, vanities, niches
-
Wasted materials and higher installation costs from poor planning
Designer tips:
-
Design the layout first, then choose a tile that works within it.
-
Consider tile size versus room proportions. A very small powder room and a 600x1200mm tile? Probably not the best match.
-
Think about where cuts will fall in relation to joinery, niches, windows, and fixtures. Your tiler will thank you, and so will your budget.
The Easiest Way to Avoid All of This?
Work with people who've seen it all before.
When you hire a designer or work with a supplier who genuinely understands tiles – not just how they look, but how they're laid – you don't have to carry the mental load of every decision. The right team will flag potential issues before they become expensive problems.
At TileZu, we're backed by over a decade of hands-on installation experience through our sister company, Elite Tile Works. We don't just sell tiles – we know how they cut, how they lay, and how to avoid the mistakes that cost time and money.
Planning your selections early will save you stress, budget blowouts, and the sinking feeling of realising something's wrong after it's already on the wall.
